Where do I belong? A nomad’s reflection

A few years ago I had the crazy idea to pack up my Chicago apartment that I lived in for 9 years put everything in boxes/storage and move to Paris for three months. I knew if I sublet my adorable vintage apartment overlooking Lake Michigan in Lincoln Park that three months later I would ease back into that life without much change. I think it was actually more difficult to pack up the apartment and purge a lot of what I had than to get on that airplane to move to Paris not knowing a soul and taking a crap shoot on an apartment I booked on the internet.

Surely I thought in three months I will figure out my plans on my next step. I wanted to shake it up right? Well two weeks after arriving in Paris my sister told me she was pregnant. First thought, I will move in with you and help with the baby and then I can come back to Paris in October. So I did… That was 2013 where I spent 4 amazing months in the city that I love.

We are now in 2015 and I have moved more times than I care to count. My belongings are still in storage and I can carry less and less stuff as I move so a lot is being donated. Its a wonderful feeling not knowing that you are being weighted down with “stuff” but not being able to put the stuff you do own away in your own closet is beginning to get to me. I wish after two years and counting of a nomadic artists life that I would be able to make a decision. Where do I belong next? I have friends that are getting married, married, kids on the way, and or working on their 2nd kid. I am happy for my friends they know exactly where they want to be and one day I want what they have. But the idea of not being tied down and jumping on the next plane to Paris thrills me even more. Anyone else feel the same way?

My drivers license expires on my birthday in April. I keep saying I am going to have to make a decision by then but now that seems like its just around the corner. So I keep pushing things off and the only decision I can make is which arrondissement I want to live in come April.

It looks like I am putting off making a decision to where I belong until at least Summer. If you are a nomad or feel stuck like I do I would love to know your thoughts on how to move forward.

The Calm

I will be the first to admit my first Paris apartment had me spoiled with two balconies and a view of Sacre Couer and Parisian rooftops. This little balcony over looking the rooftops was perfect to squeeze out onto for a Parisian breakfast or morning cup of tea. I looked out the window on rainy afternoons watching the rain fall. On warm afternoons I would pop a plant or flower vase on the outside and leave the windows open just life this photograph. There was never enough time to enjoy this beautiful view. Thankfully I snapped a few pictures of it over the months. It reminds me of all those perfect moments.

Paris in October?

Paris in October?

Plans change just like the seasons. This year my plans were canceled making time in October for Paris! Yes, but just one problem. I need an apartment… I was spoiled with this view earlier this year and its not available on such short notice. Anyone have leads on an apartment in Paris?

Paris Room with a View

A quiet evening in Paris and a room with a view. Can’t get better than this.

Rooftops in Paris, France

My first visitor (my step-sister) has arrived in Paris and she has never been out of the country. I am giving her the whirlwind tour of my favorite city. She is getting used to my long walks because its the best way to see the city! We had breakfast on the balcony and headed off to explore.

We ended the day with a coffee at my favorite place Cafe de Flore.

A little about Me – American Photographer living in Paris

I have always loved Paris and would travel back and forth from Chicago to visit. I lived in Chicago in a lovely apartment overlooking the Lake and the Zoo. When time came to renew my lease I decided it was time to take a chance. I packed up all my belongings and with lots of help from great friends I made plans to move to Paris.

I found a tiny apartment with a beautiful balcony and I am now happy to call Paris my home for 3 months.

I am a photographer selling my photographs online all over the world thanks to the help of etsy

My favorite way to see the city is by my daily walks. I am usually up early to walk the streets of Montmartre to pick up my baguette for breakfast. These usually last for hours as I nibble my baguette as I walk snapping pictures as I go. Its not unusual for me to walk from Montmartre to the Seine following the windy streets.

Favorite Arrondissement in Paris: 6th (Oden/St Germain) or the 3rd (Marais)

Favorite Market : Bastille on Thursday or Sunday

Favorite Cafe: Relais Odeon but still discovering new ones everyday

Favorite lunch spot: Avant l’Comtpoir

Favorite baguette/croissant : Au Levain du Marais

I absolutely love living in Paris and feel so lucky everyday! I am finding great places to eat and explore in Paris and I hope to share them with you through my blog.

Thanks for all of your support!

Snowy Paris Rooftops

I have wanted to live in Paris for a while now. I can’t say exactly how long. One thing on my Paris bucket list was to see it snow. It rarely snows in Paris so there wasn’t a big chance of this happening on my most recent trip. Especially because they had some good snows this year already. Today I got my wish. It may not look like much but just as the sun was beginning to set it started snowing. Just enough to coat the rooftops.
