Solo Travel in Europe

27

A while back a friend proposed the idea of me traveling alone. I thought the idea was crazy and dismissed it. I was in my young twenties and was honestly too scared. 2007 rolled around and I decided to take a trip back to Italy. My first since studying abroad. I brought two of my best friends along to show them some of my favorite parts of Italy. This is when I first started waking up early to photograph. I thought this would be a good way to explore the city solo and get out of my comfort zone. To my surprise my two friends willingly woke up early to join me. I was happy to have them along but still wanted the experience of being alone in a city. They could sense that I wanted to stay in Italy since I had been talking about how much I loved my time abroad. At one point they both encouraged me to just stay and not come come. That would be crazy I thought… or would it be?

Either way the seed had been planted knowing that I had the support of two of my best friends. I lost my job shortly after in 2008 and really wanted to follow my passion for being a travel photographer. Sometimes its other things that push you outside of your comfort zone. I have always been grateful for that little push. What did I have to loose? It took me a while to figure out my footing how I was going to make it happen and in the end of 2009 I decided I was going to go to Paris. Yes my family thought I was crazy but once I get an idea in my head its hard to let go of it. So I started planning. This was just a short trip 10 days total but my first solo trip abroad. I went using unemployment money and airline miles from my previous job. I did a lot of research on an inexpensive hotel and booked a ticket.

My high school French teacher taught us how to use the metro and it all came back to me. This was my first photo as my arrival to Paris back in 2010. I remember it vividly. I was so excited to explore and can’t remember being nervous at all. I photographed the city from morning to night for a total of 8 days. I learned to much about the city by walking and exploring. Everything was new and exciting. I remember walking around the eiffel tower and thinking ” I wonder what it would be like to live here and be inspired by this every day?” That of course planted a seed to my move to Paris in 2013. After the trip I came back to Chicago and started really working on my etsy shop posting photographs and selling them. I can’t say it was overnight it took a little while to figure things out but by the following year I was completely on my own financially as a travel photographer. That was a lot scarier than going to Paris solo.

When I talk to friends and strangers about solo travel the first thing they mention is fear. It can definately be scary going outside your comfort zone. The next couple posts I will talk about Staying safe while traveling, eating alone, perks of traveling solo and more. I would love to know your thoughts have you traveled alone? Love it or hate it? If you haven’t what’s holding you back?

South of France Dreaming

14

Its easy to fall in love with the South of France when you are taken care of like I was at La Bruyle. While staying in the South I was able to explore the neighbors a bit while taking a walk down the gravel roads. I know the roses are much higher now than during my visit and the garden is full with berries. So many reasons to go back!

Falling for Italy

3

It seems like a long time since I have posted. I had ever intention to post more while I was traveling but time got away from me. As seen in the previous posts mornings and evenings were spent chasing the light. Since the sun was out so early in the morning and it set so late at night it meant for very long days. I promise I enjoyed every minute of it. I have so much to fill you in on. But one thing I may have forgotten to mention in all the planning I tacked on an 8 day trip through italy at the end.

I just arrived home to the States to get ready for my big summer show and I am finally able to share a few images from Italy. If you were following along on instagram you would have seen my daily adventures. Here are a few of the highlights from Italy. I promise to share more soon but as you can see I fell hard and fast for Italy. How could you not when the cities smell like jasmine and the sea.

Paris time… chasing the light

19

My days have been filled lately with chasing the light. People always ask me what my favorite thing to do in Paris and I usually say walking. I walk for hours and hours discovering new parts of the city. But lately with this morning and evening light I have picked up a new activity… simply chasing the light. If you are wondering what exactly that is. I simply follow where the light is hitting the streets and buildings. It sounds easy but its all about timing.

You see this light isn’t so easy. Paris likes to play hiding games with the sun and can be moody at times. The sun rises around 6:15 these days so that means very early morning strolls. But they are worth it!

Then you also have the afternoon light which is so lovely when you find a hidden courtyard in St Germain de pres.

Just as the sun begins to set you can find the light hitting the buildings just right. Last night I found myself chasing the light which sun sets around 9:15. It makes for very long days but when the right is just right you can’t go wrong in Paris.

Counting Down to Paris

7

There are less than two weeks until I leave for Paris and I am wrapping up some projects here in the States and getting ready for my trip. So far I have a few trips planned outside of Paris including a weekend in Amsterdam, a trip to a beautiful B&B in the south west of France, and a week in Italy.

marais

Since my first solo trip to Paris in 2010 I have stayed in various arrondissement. The 7th, 16th, 18th,1st, 5th but I always find myself in the Marais. This year I will be staying close to the pompidou just 10 minutes walk to my favorite cafe in the marais and 10 minutes the other direction to rue montorgueil. You may be wondering why I always stay in a different area. The truth is I absolutely love my morning walks. Walking the streets in the early morning with the sun kissing the buildings and streets before everyone is awake is really beautiful. I love exploring hidden streets and courtyards and the more I see of Paris the more surprises I discover. I hope you will join me as I travel to Paris starting April 20th. Christmas in Paris

0

This year I came close to Christmas in Paris. Unfortunately my business requires my presence in the States during this time so I literally left the very last day I could. I had a show early in November at the Lycée Francais in Chicago. I love supporting this school every year and couldn’t think of a better way to transition back to the States. Thankfully Paris starts getting ready with holiday decorations come November 1st. Since I was in Paris until the 7th it was crunch time walking around the city and see what had already been put up. Sadly, the lights were strung on the streets but they didn’t turn on until much later in the month. One of these days I will get there! Here are a few photos of the festivities beginning in my favorite city.
