Solo Travel in Europe

27

A while back a friend proposed the idea of me traveling alone. I thought the idea was crazy and dismissed it. I was in my young twenties and was honestly too scared. 2007 rolled around and I decided to take a trip back to Italy. My first since studying abroad. I brought two of my best friends along to show them some of my favorite parts of Italy. This is when I first started waking up early to photograph. I thought this would be a good way to explore the city solo and get out of my comfort zone. To my surprise my two friends willingly woke up early to join me. I was happy to have them along but still wanted the experience of being alone in a city. They could sense that I wanted to stay in Italy since I had been talking about how much I loved my time abroad. At one point they both encouraged me to just stay and not come come. That would be crazy I thought… or would it be?

Either way the seed had been planted knowing that I had the support of two of my best friends. I lost my job shortly after in 2008 and really wanted to follow my passion for being a travel photographer. Sometimes its other things that push you outside of your comfort zone. I have always been grateful for that little push. What did I have to loose? It took me a while to figure out my footing how I was going to make it happen and in the end of 2009 I decided I was going to go to Paris. Yes my family thought I was crazy but once I get an idea in my head its hard to let go of it. So I started planning. This was just a short trip 10 days total but my first solo trip abroad. I went using unemployment money and airline miles from my previous job. I did a lot of research on an inexpensive hotel and booked a ticket.

My high school French teacher taught us how to use the metro and it all came back to me. This was my first photo as my arrival to Paris back in 2010. I remember it vividly. I was so excited to explore and can’t remember being nervous at all. I photographed the city from morning to night for a total of 8 days. I learned to much about the city by walking and exploring. Everything was new and exciting. I remember walking around the eiffel tower and thinking ” I wonder what it would be like to live here and be inspired by this every day?” That of course planted a seed to my move to Paris in 2013. After the trip I came back to Chicago and started really working on my etsy shop posting photographs and selling them. I can’t say it was overnight it took a little while to figure things out but by the following year I was completely on my own financially as a travel photographer. That was a lot scarier than going to Paris solo.

When I talk to friends and strangers about solo travel the first thing they mention is fear. It can definately be scary going outside your comfort zone. The next couple posts I will talk about Staying safe while traveling, eating alone, perks of traveling solo and more. I would love to know your thoughts have you traveled alone? Love it or hate it? If you haven’t what’s holding you back?

Thank you Wells Street

7

Wells Street in Chicago is my favorite festival for so many reasons. Its the kickoff to summer in Chicago and filled with so much life. Yes, there is also a lot of drinking and music. Luckily I am at the other end of the fest so I don’t get as much of the craziness. In years past I never plan for Wells Street as I should. I have run out of product, bags, and with the amount of traffic (people and customers) it just gets crazy!

This past week I planned day and night drawing out booth plans. Strategizing. I had meetings with friends to discuss booth ideas. I spent days lining up the order for the walls and decided to do velcro as a way to attach my wood blocks to the walls. Great idea (check) Well not all good ideas work out… With the heat the industrial strength velcro did not work and blocks were falling left and right quickly! Thank goodness for a good friend that stepped in to help!

Of course I did not feel prepared after all the planning. Fathers Day was Sunday and it felt like everyone decided to come Saturday instead. I hadn’t even finished unpacking my booth and was overwhelmed with customers. My iPad fell first thing breaking my square swipe. By days end I ran out of bags and by day two there were no business cards left. It was so great to see so many familiar faces stop by the booth. Past customers and friends from all over stopped by the booth. Friends from college who I haven’t seen in 10 years surprised me! I am so grateful and thrilled for such an amazing weekend. No matter what has happened in past years I can never set expectations and just go in with an open mind.

Here are a few pictures of the booth I snapped at the beginning and then as the crowds came:

This last picture was the line to look at the print box. I am going to have to come up with a better solution or two boxes so this doesn’t happen again 🙂

There were so many amazing customers over the two days I wish I could write about them all. But my two favorite were. 1. A couple has been buying my art since the year they were engaged. Each year they come back on their anniversary and buy a piece of art to add to their house. Love them! 2. A customer walked into the booth and opened his backpack to pull out a book. Inside the book was a stack of small bills he had saved his money so he could buy a small piece of my art.

From the bottom of my heart thank you all so much for your love and support and a wonderful weekend! There are three more shows left for the summer so if you are in the Chicago area stop by and say hello!

Santas Helper this week

2

This last week I have been feeling a little like santas helper… aka an elf. I am so grateful that so many people decided to make RL Photography part of their Christmas this year. I have been making, wrapping, and shipping orders to go out. My postman made a special pickup. There are a few more days left to order in my etsy shop. Happy Holidays!

One of those rainy days…

It has turned colder in Paris and the leaves are starting to turn. Yesterday Paris was sunny and beautiful. Today has been rainy and gross most of the day. Just one of those days… Nothing a good cup of coffee can’t fix!

An Afternoon at the Louvre

On my list earlier this year was to explore the Napolean III apartments at the Louvre. You could spend days exploring the Louvre so its best to come with an action plan and pick a few parts you want to see.

Chicago El Stairs

el stairs canvas

A few years back I shot this photograph on a cold January day of the Chicago el stairs. I don’t take a lot of Chicago pictures but this one is one of my best sellers at all of my Chicago art shows. I lived by the lake for 8 years and until recently didn’t take the el to get around the city. The el is located a little west from the lake and wasn’t convenient. Now I live between two stops on the brown line and I am using the el to go everywhere! Tomorrow when I head back to the merchandise mart I will have a quick commute on the brown line. For those of you in the Chicago area that will be attending the OOAK Show stop by booth 2068. The first 5 people to say hello to me will get a holiday gift from RL Photography. Happy Holidays!
