Laussane – The San Francisco of Switzerland

I am known to be a bit of a planner. But when it came to this past weekend on Friday I had not picked a destination for the weekend adventure. On a whim and by recommendation of Rick Steves before I left I was told Laussane was beautiful and the San Fran of Switzerland. I found a reasonable hotel and found it only to be about 3 hrs by train in the French side of Switzerland. Within a few minutes of being on the train, life switched from German to French and I felt much more at ease. I started thinking of all the French food I had missed including the delicious croissant I would have for breakfast.

I was up before the sun and ready to explore the city. I will explain in further posts this week more about the city. I started to explore with my camera and I stumbled upon the snow topped mountains. There I fell in love with the beauty of Laussane!!

Snow Topped Swiss Mountains

This weekend was filled with lots of train travel and an amazing boat ride in between. I spent the weekend in Lausanne and traveled to Geneva and Montreaux. I will fill you in this week on everything individually. The highlight of the weekend was the boat ride to Montreaux. It rained towards the end of the boat ride so I didn’t get to explore the actual town for very long. I grew up in Ohio and never saw anything close to the beauty of what I saw this weekend.

I have traveled on the boats between the towns in the Amalfi Coast in the Summer which is beautiful but this in freezing January was a sight to see. I hope you enjoy this photograph as much as I do!!

Swiss Post office

I decided to spend a few weeks in Switzerland this January but I wanted to continue to run my etsy business. I packed a suitcase with packing materials and photographs with hopes I would sell some photos while being away. Well 3 days in and I have two orders. Which meant operation post office was in effect. I took the bus in to the train station where there was a post office. I purchased some adorable chocolate lindt bears and added them to my package and off I went. The post office is similar to that in the United States but you take a number like at a deli counter and wait to be called. It was pretty quick and easy. The woman was a little thrown off by the envelope and the big raised bump but after I told her it was chocolate she smiled. Mission complete! Lets hope the trend continues!

The Swiss Life

I arrived safely in Switzerland yesterday. I took a train from Zurich to Baden, a small town 20 minutes away. I was surprised to find that there was no snow and it was much warmer than Chicago. I am staying with a friend of mine for the next couple weeks so its a little different than staying in a hotel for a few nights at a time. I decided to venture out this morning to pick up a few things from the grocery store. The language barrier was a bit difficult but I managed my way. Today turned out to be very rainy and windy (it feels a little like the Wizard of Oz) Just a few photos to show the area I am staying in. I can’t wait to explore the old town of Baden tomorrow.
